CRITICAL REVIEW

"...but if this is a recipe-or a secret-of the ingredients Vinka has used to create this unique body of work, it is by no means expressive of its magic effect, or the energy her art radiates. At first sight her work is absract, or semi-abstract, evocative of the central vulnerability of organic tissues, of flesh, but also of the primordial world of lichens, of rock, of shells, or sedimentation exposed to the corrosive effects of time and the elements. But if time or nature are forces out of our control, she is somehow trying to counteract natures disorder with an outside protection for this internal vulnerability.
Sometimes when I observe her work, having known Vinka for many years, it is obvious that her inner calm, strength and persistence derive from her roots, but also from having bridged cultural differences. She seems to be squaring a circle which for many people out of their, original environment present an impasse - in that she draws her inspiration and richness from them which in turn are reflected in her work. Her Mediterranean background, her rocky Dalmatian homeland of the coast and islands of Sibenik protrude in each of her reliefs. The intertwining elements of her acquired northern culture (she became a Londoner long ago) are seen in the outside rationality of geometrical shapes similar to the way the human mind needs to impose order on natures disorder.
There is definitely a Grenbergian attitude in her work. It is evident in Vinka's total lack of concern for the fashions in art imposed by the critics, media and art markets. It can be observed in her use of seemingly insignificant materials she explores and from the way she uses them with one concern only, i.e. to serve her inner creative need. This makes her a contemporary artist par excellence."
